While light magics are straight-forward shields, healing type protective magic would be protective against things that aren't 'grr smash.' Wards to keep bad luck away, preventatives against sickness (so if like a cold is going around, you can cast something to protect against diseases that will last a short while, like for a visit to bring a friend chicken soup for example), wards to keep away nightmares, or hide your presence from bad spirits. Threshold blessings are also a wonderful use of this kind of magic, which will bring positive energy to a home.
