Note: A lot happens in this arc, but I am going to try to focus solely on Tsuna's actions and development throughout the arc. For further information, the KHR wiki contains a more thorough summary and information about the lore.
Since his canon point, Tsuna and his companions entered Merone base with the intention of locating and apprehending Irie Shoichi, a member of the Millefiore family who they believe can provide clues that will get them back to the past.
Tsuna took their initial battle against Dendro Chilum, handily defeating him and showing off his new attack, the X-Burner, though it was an incomplete version (the move requiring a balance that is hard to gauge by instinct). As they were noticed by the enemy, Tsuna offerede to act as a distraction so that the others could advance further into the base. He faced off against several robots known as Strau Mosca, again defeating them when the power of his X-Burner. However, the power was too much and Tsuna fainted, and he was captured by the enemy.
Spanner, his captor and creator of the Moscas, was impressed with the X-Burner and wanted to see the completed version. Tsuna was forced to wait as Spanner developed a pair of contact lenses that would allow Tsuna to have the balance he needed. Before the lenses could be completed, Spanner and Tsuna were attacked by another Millefiore member, Iris, who took Spanner's helping Tsuna as an act of betrayal.
Tsuna fought Iris while Spanner completed the lenses, doing so in the nick of time. Merone Base was starting to break due to the battles being fought by Tsuna and his Guardians. With Iris defeated, Tsuna headed back towards his friends with Spanner in tow. But before he could reach them and the research laboratory, Tsuna had to face off against another Millefiore, Genkishi. Tsuna was ultimately the victor and made his way to the laboratory where he faced off against Shoichi.
Shoichi then revealed that he was actually working for the Vongola family and had worked with the Tsuna of the future to bring their past versions forward, as they were the key to defeating Byakuran. Merone base was devised as a way to accelerate training and allow everyone to get stronger quickly. However, Byakuran knew all this, allowed it to happen, and challenges Tsuna and the Vongola to a game of Choice, a war game that would ultimately determine the fate of the world. Tsuna and Co. were given ten days to train and rest up.
However, as they begin their preparations, they are overheard by Kyoko and Haru, the non-combatants of the group who have been supporting the others by doing chores around the base. They effectively strike until they are told what is going on, something Tsuna has been reluctant to reveal. The situation they are in is a dangerous one, and Tsuna does not want to expose them to unnecessary harm. But after a lot of reflection, and the fact that the boys are helpless at doing the chores and training, he eventually relents. He speaks to Kyoko and Haru, laying out everything since the very beginning and apologizes for not trusting them. And Kyoko is able to provide some insight for Tsuna with regards to his own training.
Eventually, the day of the Choice Battle arrives. While Tsuna is able to overcome his opponent, Torikabuto, the Vongola ultimately lose the game of Choice. Shoichi attempts to demands a rematch, but Byakuran denies it, only to be overruled by Uni, the secondary leader of the Millefiore family, who has been in a suspended state until this moment. With Byakuran's reluctance evident, Uni asks Tsuna for protection, and after a time of hesitation, the Vongola ultimately flee with Uni in tow. They do not get a chance for respite though, as they are pursued by Byakuran and his elite soldiers. With little choice, they head into the woods for a place to make a last stand.
For the first portions of the battle, Tsuna stays behind as part of the last line of defence, trusting the others to take over and being grateful when powerful allies like the Varia join them. When Byakuran sends Ghost, a version of himself from a parallel world and his final soldier, Tsuna springs into action. However, Ghost's ability is to absorb the flames of everyone around him, and Byakuran is able to use that power to greatly strengthen himself. Thus begins the final showdown.
While Tsuna puts up a valiant effort, Byakuran overpowers him and is almost prepared to deliver a final blow. However, Reborn speaks up, reminding Tsuna of what is at stake and the promise that he made to his friends. It is enough to revive Tsuna, who states that doesn't regret coming to the future even though it has been a painful and difficult time and that he will continue to oppose Byakuran. This awakens the will of Vongola Primo, who unlocks the seal on the Vongola rings, allowing them to take their true form and awaken greater power within Tsuna.
The next round of the battle begins, with Tsuna overpowering Byakuran this time and pushing him to fight with all of his strength. It is a tense fight, coming to a head when Uni begins to use her power to revive the Arcobaleno, an act that will result in her death. This enrages Byakuran, who needs Uni's power to complete his goal of taking over the world so that he can remake it to his liking. But Uni passes away, leaving Byakuran enraged and turning on Tsuna, blaming him for Uni's actions. Tsuna replies that it was Byakuran who pushed Uni to such an act and that he will never forgive him. They both launch a final attack, with Tsuna's X-Burner overcoming Byakuran, who disappears in the flames.
With Byakuran defeated and the Arcobaleno revived, everyone is able to return to the past. Tsuna and his friends bid farewell to the friends that they made in the future, and return home, to a point just before they left. It is in between where Chapter 282 ends and Chapter 283 begins that Tsuna will return to the game.
Tsuna grows a lot in this particular arc. He is pushed into the position of Boss and has to start making decisions that have a lot of impact, and is faced with a lot of intense training and battles that cause him to grow up in a short period of time. He has to shed the cowardly sides of himself, and learn to trust his allies, whether it is with a battle or with information. And he comes to accept that the painful parts of life are just as important to him, even if he doesn't like them at the time. But at his core, he remains the same: someone who will do anything he can to protect the people who are most precious to him.
