⦿ Characters
What kind of characters are playable in Isle of Avalon?
  • Canon characters
  • Original characters
  • CRAU
  • Children old enough to speak in complete sentences and have clear personalities
  • Non-human characters (will be shrunk to human size range if too large)
  • Canonical alternate universe characters (ex: different Doctors from Doctor Who, Final Fantasy characters from Kingdom Hearts)
  • Alternative series duplicates (ex: Sword in the Stone Merlin and BBC Merlin, OUAT Snow White and original Disney Snow White-- the story, writing, development, etc. are clearly different and while they share the same identity, they are essentially different characters)
  • MMO and tabletop original characters created by you
  • Characters from the same series that do not have a significant relationship or need to interact

  • What kind of characters are you NOT allowed to play in this game?
  • Fandom AU
  • Fanfiction characters
  • Author self-insert characters
  • Characters who have not been sufficiently developed in canon to have a clear personality
  • Real people, even if they are depicted as a personality on a show (i.e. Stephen Colbert, Gavin Free, tabletop players, etc.)
  • Other peoples' original characters, including tabletop and MMO characters
  • Multiples of the same character
  • Adaptation duplicates for a character already in game (ex: Eren from Attack on Titan manga and Eren from Attack on Titan anime, Ramuda from Hypnosis Mic drama CDs and Ramuda from Hypnosis Mic manga; if it is the same story/character in a different form as an already played character in the game, it is not considered a playable character)
  • Characters from the same series that have a significant relationship or need to interact.

  • Are players allowed to play multiple characters from the same series?
Yes, provided the characters do not have a significant relationship (positive, negative, or otherwise). It must not be out of character for both characters to avoid interaction, as playercest is not permitted.

How many character slots may each player have?
Each player gets 5 character slots maximum. Two applications may be submitted per app round.

Are there cast caps in this game?
    No.

What is the policy on characters with "split" or multiple personalities?
If the two personalities are considered different actual people (like Dark and Daisuke from D.N.Angel or Yugi and Yami from Yu-Gi-Oh) then they would be considered two different characters and would need to be applied for by different players, as they can and would need to interact with each other. However, if the personalities are the same person effectively (like Nikki and Jessica from Heroes or Akito and Agito from Air Gear) then they are considered one singular character. If you are unsure, please ask a mod

What do you do if your character's background contains sensitive topics?
Please include an opt-out post for characters whose backgrounds contain potentially triggering topics, with a list of general descriptors for these topics. Please warn in the subject line of threads or at the top of a post if any of these topics come up during the course of RP.

Are characters with few canon appearances allowed?
Provided that the story gives the character a clear presence and personality, it’s fine. We recognize that not all canons have detailed histories for their characters. If their content amounts to a trailer’s worth of appearance or a single scene with fewer lines than can be counted with one hand, that is not sufficient. As this is a bit of a gray area, please ask a mod if you are uncertain and we will review the character with you.

Can we app characters from canons that have no official English translation?
Yes! If an unofficial translation is widely available and reliable, that’s great and easy for us to review. If the series is a non-English series that does not have any readily accessible translation, please give us a heads up at the top of your Character Info section (this will not count toward the 1200 words) so that we don’t go on a wild goose chase trying to find info and know to seek out someone with language experience if we have any questions.

How do you change your character's journal?
It is your responsibility to keep your Taken List entry updated with current information by creating a new comment. Do not respond to your old comment with update requests.

If your CRAU character experienced physical or skill changes in a previous game, what may be carried over?
Any intentionally created physical changes like piercings, tattoos, scarring, and so on would be allowed. Though full species changes are not going to be allowed, small body modifications such as appendage growths (cat ears, a tail, antlers, etc), prosthetics, repaired physical injuries (healed scars, regrown lost body parts, etc.) and other similar modifications that were gained in another game would be permitted at the cost of one inventory slot in your application, pending mod approval. Learned abilities from other games are allowed (so if they spent time studying how to do origami or kickboxing, etc.) but supernatural abilities would all be converted into this world's version of magic, whether from canon or CRAU.

Can my character have multiple CRAU?
Yes, that’s fine. Please only designate the most current information in your application.

How does Avalon handle actively dead characters? (Died in canon, ghosts, zombies, lich, etc.)
They will be brought back a second before death and healed, so they still are able to remember what happened but their body is still alive and heal-able to avoid needing to start off with a ritual. Avalon will heal them upon transportation. Though most people will be returned to the exact moment in time, perhaps characters may be able to seek a way within the game to change their fate. Only time will tell.

Undead and ghosts will be able to come in their current form but will not have any supernatural abilities beyond what they would've had when they were a human. Their physical form may still display as whatever their species is, however, but they would not come in with an advantage over other players.

My character does not have to sleep/eat/breathe/vibrate at the same frequency than this universe/whatever. Do they have basic needs here?
Yes, as aligns with their species. (So a robot may not need to sleep, but if your character is humanoid they will have humanoid needs. A robot may need to oil their joints once in a while, but a human wouldn't.)

If your character does not have a body at all, you can give them one at your discretion or keep them as a disembodied voice/projection/etc. If your character does not have a canonical appearance/body, we ask that you choose an age-appropriate PB for icons. Unless your character is canonically only a video game avatar (series like .hack// or Sword Art Online) in which their original appearances are not shown, characters are not given an alternate body/gaming avatar.
If your character is half-demon, half-human and they have two forms, they can retain both forms and the ability to shift between them, but will not have access to any additional abilities that would normally go with the transformation. It is aesthetic only.

Do you have a standard wait time for applying from new canons?
Yes. Characters may be applied for after the canon has been released to the public for 1 month. After that, we ask that players apply spoiler warnings in subject lines where spoilers are present. The same policy applies to canon updates for characters currently in-game who have had new content released for their canon.

    ⦿ State of Arrival
Upon arrival, characters may bring with them 5 inventory items. What does this include?
Characters can come in with 5 inventory items not including basic clothing. Characters may bring 1 pet as 1 inventory slot. If a character carries multiple weapons, each weapon counts as 1 inventory slot. No vehicles or game-breaking items. Technology should be fine as long as it doesn't require canon- or CRAU-specific power sources that would not be available in Avalon. Internet-connected items such as game-based communicators will be able to view an offline archive of posts, photos, videos, etc. that were already present on the character's device but will not be able to connect for new updates or out-of-game communication. Item sets do not count as one item unless the items are parts of a whole function (example: a mortar and pestle or a Kitchen Aid mixer with a whisk attachment can come as one item, but a chemistry set which contains beakers, vials, ph strips, ingredients, a bunson burner, etc. would not be allowed).

For the protection of the time-paused multiverse, time/space bending items including instant transportation items will not work. Characters will need to learn to create totems using in-world magic if they would like to fast-travel in-game. (Totem Recipes will be available for purchase with rewards points at the Elphame Traders'.) If you are uncertain if a specific item would be considered game-breaking, please feel free to ask! If an inventory item is requested but not allowed because it is considered game-breaking, the mods will allow you to select another item to fill that slot if you are accepted.

Can we bring magical items as inventory items?
Yes and no. Magical items that are not game-breaking and have one specific magical purpose are allowed. However, items that give players access to magic outside of their specified in-game magic may be brought in but will have access to canon magics removed. (So if your character wants it for sentimental value or aesthetics, they can still have it.)

If you would like your character to have multiple-use items from your canon that have abilities that would allow you to overlap an available magic type (Dust, Materia, crystal magic forms of all types, etc.) it will be treated as an individual weapon and will arrive with only one use.

I want to refill my ammunition/magic points for an item/whatever. How do I do that?
The rewards page has a reward available for magical reloading. You will have to purchase that.

    What qualifies as a pet?
While cats, dogs, hamsters, goldfish, and other standard pets will all count, you can also have specific creatures that exist in canon come as a pet. Note that pets will have their powers nerfed upon arrival if they are supernatural in nature, as they are considered separate from familiars. If you have a specific creature from canon (not a general recurring creature) they would need to be brought as a pet. Note that mounts (rideable animals) are possible to bring, but they will be shrunken down to fit comfortably indoors. If your character needs a mount, we recommend your character contact the Rent-a-Ride-- they rent and sell horses and horse-drawn carriages. (See Locations page for details.) Note that 1 pet = 1 inventory slot.

Does my character's inventory need to be on them at their current canon point?
No. You can give them items from a future or past canon point as long as it follows the month wait-time for spoilers. ICly, they don't even need to know what they are because of how our canon updates system works.

Do I have to include clothing/armor in the inventory?
Your character can wear whatever non-magical clothing they have on at their canon point upon arrival. Armor may be included in that if the armor does not have special effects of its own. If it has a special ability of some kind, it must be counted in the inventory. If characters would like additional outfits, an outfit will count as a single inventory slot.

Characters arrive by being plunged into the water. What happens to their inventory?
Initially, the Lady of the Lake had some trouble with the magic getting things to safely arrive and turtles worked tirelessly to retrieve and rescue anything that came with newcomers. As of February 2021, Merlin and Archimedes managed to enchant a hammerspace-like wardrobe that opens to each person's items and pets when the person touches the handle. The item retrieval wardrobe (nicknamed the "Shit Box" by Archimedes) is kept at the Rent-a-Ride. Incidentally, if someone were so inclined, they could use their individual space like a locker if they had something they wanted to keep away from everyone else and were willing to make the journey to it when they needed it.

    ⦿ Abilities & Magic
In order to be pulled into the Isle of Avalon, characters are bound to a mythical creature of some kind. Faeries, spirits, demons from a variety of cultures and worlds are available, but you may only bond with one. Basically, it’s a magical familiar that enables your character to create and use magic. Your character’s arrival and these bonds act as a channel to restore the magic of Avalon using the magics of their world, much like a trimming of a plant can give birth to a new plant. Your character can help in the setting simply by using magics of any kind and maintaining a bond, so even if you are not interested in participating in the plot and choose to interact with only the festive and slice of life aspects of the game or in-game quests, you are welcome to play how you choose.

What types of creatures can my character bond with as their familiar?
Your character gets one familiar. It has to be a mythological or fictional creature. It cannot be a special being from your canon, but if your character’s canon has general monster types, it can be one of those. In other words, a Cactuar from Final Fantasy or a Cyndaquil from Pokemon are OK but Cerberus from Cardcaptor Sakura or Megatron from Transformers is not.

The creature must be from your character’s canon and not from another canon. If your character does not have canon creatures, all real-life mythological creatures such as real-life fae, spirits, demons, ghosts, etc. are fine as long as they are not considered culturally insensitive. (In other words, if a creature is considered sacred to an active peoples’ religious beliefs, it is not acceptable.) If you just want a normal animal, it's a spirit version of that animal.

Is it my character’s choice or my choice?
Player’s choice. We will ask you for your top preferred choices for the character in the application. In most cases, your top choice will be given, but if we do not believe that the choice falls within the guidelines above, we reserve the right to ask for a second choice in a revision.

Does the familiar have free will? Do they have all of their canon abilities and powers?
To an extent. Familiars will not actively act to cause harm to the character they are bonded to and will not begin indiscriminately attacking other characters, even if they may be aggressive in canon. They will protect their bonded character using whatever abilities they may canonly have. We leave it up to you if you want to play with how protective they get and maybe have some trouble for your characters and their CR—go for it. You can also assume they have personalities and behaviors of their own and play that how you want to. Always ask permission from other players before having your familiar react negatively to their character. Otherwise, have fun!

    Can familiars talk?
Up to you. As long as you aren't granting your familiar absurd powers or features that don't apply to the creature type, you can customize it pretty much however you want.

I want a creature that is huge.
Okay, but they will be shrunken down to fit indoors comfortably. It may return to its normal size under times of great stress or danger in order to protect the character it is bonded with.

My character wants to ride their familiar.
How would you like it if someone rode you? Familiars may not actively cause harm to their person, but they don't have to be nice to or go along with whatever they say. Be respectful. Get a horse.

    Are they always there?
No, they have shit to do, but will always come when you call them. You’re bonded, so if you need them, just call their name and they’ll hear you.

Okay, the creatures have their powers—but what about my character’s powers?
Canon abilities will be null and voided and converted into magic for this world. To this end, regardless of species, characters will be brought to baseline human capabilities, though non-humans may present with physical appearance-based species characteristics. Those who have gained peak human physical capabilities through training may keep them, but enhanced physical capabilities are considered to fall under the supernatural category and will be converted to Avalon-style magic.

All characters will need to learn magic from scratch alongside their familiar. That said, your character can likely regain abilities similar to theirs in canon overtime and simply need to learn it through this world’s magic. That’s up to you.

Characters can only learn one category of magic at a time, but generally as long as they stay within that grouping of magic, we’re fine if you want to play around and do whatever you want as long as you don’t godmod. For characters who are canonly good at a thousand things, we apologize but you will not have access to all modules of magic at this time. It may be possible to gain access to an additional one at a later date.

What if my character is considered a normal human in canon, but has a skill that is not technically possible?
This would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. A good example is characters who have a strong affinity toward animals. It’s possible for people to bond with, study, and interact with animals and have this be a developed skill. This would be allowed. However, suddenly speaking the animal’s language would be considered supernatural and would not be allowed (unless you choose animal magic for your character, of course). If your character is naturally lucky, they can still have luck influence their lives within reason, but not to the point of world-bending probability manipulation.

What are the types of magic available?
All available magic is for minor/immediate effects and not significant enough to affect large areas or affect more than one person at a time or for a long period of time. Note that you can mix and match any familiar with any magic type- you do not need to select a magic type that aligns with your character’s familiar. There are two categories of magic disciplines: Primary and Secondary.

Primary magic types are easier to master than secondary and include the following:
  • Light magic: creating lights, bending light (invisibility, glamors, illusion magic), hard light generation (shields/protect spell equivalent)
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Full-room, tactile illusions (combination of hard light and illusions). Details require significant practice, but could be used to create entire illusory scenarios. (Must be present to cast, you cannot create illusions and leave someone trapped.)

  • Elemental magic: Air, fire, water, earth, electric, etc. This is basic magic, you cannot control the existing elements within the environment, but can generate and direct your own.
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Control existing elements within the environment. (Ex: Calm fires, push back waves, spin tornados, etc.)

  • Healing magic: Heal non-mortal wounds, cure natural illnesses (non-magical), protective magic, physical enhancement magic (temporary increased strength, etc.) Cannot make anyone invulnerable or immortal. Works on both animals and, to a small extent, plants.
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Area of Effect casting-- cast healing magic across a group. It will do less than a concentrated healing spell would, but you can cast on more people at once to reduce the amount of time needed to heal each member of the party and ability Locking (temporarily limit someone to only using the last spell that they cast. The spell will be boosted significantly in power/skill, but they cannot use anything else until the lock wears off- beginning practice 1 minute, up to 30 minutes max).

  • Animal magic: talk to animals, transform into animals, partial animal transformations with significant practice (give yourself ears, tail, etc. but mostly retain human form- very finicky practice) May have some side-effects, like not being able to turn back if you’re too tired or learning your pets really are judgmental. Can persuade animals to go along with their plans at times, but cannot fully control their actions. This only works with natural animals, not familiars.
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Transform or partially transform into mythical animals (Non-fairy/humanoid).

  • Dark magic: Curses, jinxes, hexes, love enchantments, causing physical pain without injury, mild shadow manipulation.
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Travel through connected (touching) shadows only to places the character has been before. (If there is too much light, the mage may be trapped and unable to travel.) Cannot stay stationary within the shadows, as there is no shadow realm to hang out in.

  • Kinetic magic: Moving objects with your mind, push/pull other people, teleportation, increase/decrease speed of movement, flight.
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Vibrate body at high frequency to be able to phase through objects. (Note: Will only work on self.)

  • Alchemy: Transmutation, transfiguration, and fast-pass potion brewing. Transform components they have into other forms through the use of sigils and alchemical equipment (the royal court will provide a free basic kit for alchemists to encourage their growth). Examples: if an alchemist is near iron ore in a cave, they can alchemize it to create a sword instantly, or on the beach they can instantly turn sand to glass. Alchemists do not need to meet the 10 potion minimum for potion-brewing and can begin immediately. Advanced alchemists can break down materials from already composed items to create components. Note: alchemy will work on organic materials, but not on living materials. Familiars can magically generate sigils after they are learned the first time for automatic casting. There are more details here and here as per player questions.
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Fluid animation of elements according to the whim of the creator. (Ex: Toys that move on their own, a scaregrow with the whim to protect fields, enchant a spare key to run away from thieves, etc.)

  • Cognitive Magic: Touch-based post-cognition (see the recent past of an item by touching it), dream walking, astral projection, telepathic messaging (can send, but cannot read others' thoughts), hypnotic suggestion (can hypnotize people to do things with player permission, provided it does not go against the core of who that person is-- i.e. you can't make them kill someone if they wouldn't hurt a fly, etc.), and limited psychic damage. (Note: post-cognition cannot be used on corpses, hypnosis cannot be used on animals.)
-Fairy Blessing Upgrade: Telepathic conversation (two-way, by consent only- they can't read thoughts without permission).
  • Fairy blessing upgrades are available as of December 2021. This upgrade must be obtained through IC action and cannot be obtained if your character does not complete the associated task. After a character has a base understanding of their primary magic, they may travel to Nicnevin and find Mary Lywd. Whether they can defeat Mary Lywd in a battle of rhymes or not, as long as they participate and have a foundational understanding of their primary magic, they will be able to gain the associated Fairy Blessing Upgraded (listed above). These are only available to primary magic types at this time.

Secondary magic types are essentially the second magic set that your character can learn. They will be more of a challenge and may be much harder to control if your character hasn’t gotten a good grasp on their primary type. Secondary magic types can be any of the original primary disciplines or one of the following additional discipline options:
  • Green Magic: Rapid growth of plant and fungi, control of plant movement, stimulate and magically aerosolize plant poisons and antidotes, grow plants in any organic environment including living beings (use with caution; may be fatal to host-- must touch host to “seed” them, cannot do remotely), hanahaki curses. Can enhance certain components of plants, including flavor and spice levels even after cooking. Plant empathy (sense the wellbeing and conditions of plants).
  • Technomancy: Communicate with computers the same way you would a person; command and control computers with your voice; use predictive and calculating capabilities of computers to predict potential outcomes at a rapid pace. This secondary magic extends using your base magic and allows you to send spells over texts and voice or video calls. (Elemental users, yes, you can send a blast of water through a computer screen at someone if they’re being rude.) Can “digitize” items through photographic magic to send them to other places (think Willy Wonka sending a candy bar through the TV.)
  • Siphon Magic: Siphon magic from other sources, such as magical or cursed objects, and either redirect it as energy blasts or absorb it to temporarily juice up physical strength. Gives mages the ability to purify curses. It is possible to absorb magic from living beings to temporarily prevent them from using it, but this requires a couple minutes of direct contact with the person. Effects may last anywhere from a couple hours to a couple of days. (To be used with player permission only.) Failure to utilize absorbed magic can result in severe pain to the user, so it must be used within a few hours after it is siphoned. (The more magic siphoned, the quicker it must be expelled.)

  • CW: The following magic disciplines contain concepts that may be uncomfortable to some players, including use of blood, bodily harm and consumption, servitude, the dead and undead. These are only options and do not need to be engaged to enjoy the game.
  • Bargaining Magic: Form contracts with fairies to summon their assistance when needed. They can call multiple creatures outside of their familiars to fulfill the purpose of contracts with them. Contracts come with a price equal to the strength of the summoned being and the task their contract is for. For example: a kelpie may agree to act as an underwater mount and combatant at your behest, and they may ask to eat your right eye in exchange for their service; whereas a more benign fairy like moon rabbits may be summoned to clear pests out of your garden for a small price like a bag full of moonstones you’ve gathered from a river. Can only form contracts with fairies they have met in game events. Fairies can only form contracts to do what they are capable of. (So that kelpie is not going to assist in baking cupcakes for your friend’s birthday, for example, and a moon rabbit won’t be very good in a fight.) Once contracted, users of this magic can call fairies from any location at any time to fulfill their pact. Penalty for violation of contracts may vary; dangerous fae may demand death as a penalty, benign fae may simply refuse future service.
  • Death Magic: seeing ghosts/spirits, exorcisms, raise the dead as mindless zombies, influence over the undead once raised (complete control only at mastery), aid ghosts/spirits in possession of living bodies (self or direct to others temporarily). Temporary possession of other characters and objects is possible, but leaves the Death Mage’s body vulnerable; body cannot exist without a soul for more than 1 hour a day, and will automatically suck your soul back in after that in a way that may cause rapid motion sickness so time it carefully. Incense is often used by Death Mages to cover up otherworldly smells that may occur.
  • Blood Magic: From within the Blood Mage’s own body, they can solidify their blood outside of their body to weaponize it (though should keep track of how much they use-- they cannot generate more blood, so it is possible to faint from anemia if they are not careful). Their own blood becomes prehensile. Blood Mages can sense the flow of blood nearby, which may allow them to sense other living beings’ presences even if they cannot see them once honed. If the blood of another is ingested, they will receive visions of an impactful memory from that person from either the past or future. When used on others, it can be used to create puppet-like control over the target’s body. (Must have player permission if any of the listed blood magic is done with other characters.)

  • End of content-warned section.

Are there any types of other magic available that aren’t related to the familiars?
  • Potions: Creating concoctions to have different effects. A significant sect of this is used to counteract other types of magics and creating anti-magic potions that have much greater effects than basic healing magic. (This is how you can heal curses and magical illnesses.) However, there are all kinds of potions available from animated hair dye to transforming yourself into another person. The wide variety of capabilities potions offers is counteracted by the fact that ingredients may be more difficult to come by and mistakes may have more significant negative repercussions.
  • Rituals: Large-scale effects, long-lasting spells, and extreme magics can be performed using rituals. Rituals require multiple people, ingredients or specific magical items, and sometimes physical acts (dancing, sacrifice, sex, trances, fights, etc). This can be done for anything from changing the weather for a week to providing protective cover for an entire building or acts of necromancy. If you want your characters to perform a ritual, please contact a mod with the details of what your characters would like to do. Rituals require a minimum of 3 characters to perform.
  • Magical items: Magical items may be introduced into the game with specific effects. If your character gains an item that can perform a specific type of magic, it does not need to match your character’s magic type.
  • Synchronic magic: Synchronic magic allows two characters to move perfectly in sync to perform spells outside of their typical wheelhouse or beyond the normal spell strength described above. After a little finger painting on each other's face and collar bones and some deep meditation while performing the spell, the caster of the spell will have complete control over the movements of the person the spell is cast upon.

For the duration of the spell, the person who the spell was cast upon will mentally reside in the caster's head outside of their body. Their body will do anything the caster's does. It typically requires the consent of the person it's being cast upon, though there are not-yet-introduced forms of the spell that do not. There are side-effects and drawbacks to this type of magic, including a high potential for error if the two characters don't have trust and understanding. More details on the the fourth TDM where it was introduced.

  • Can my character infuse items with magic?
Yes, but not without a load of practice! Permanent infusing any object with magic would take a mastery level in their magic type. However, teamwork makes the dreamwork. Alchemy can be used to permanently change the state of items, so in combination with other types of magic, it’s possible to make magical items. Neat, huh?

Wait, so characters can use their magic together to do stuff?
Yeah, it’s pretty sweet. Two heads are better than one. Or two magics, as the case may be. We aren’t going to micromanage how you do this, just be reasonable, communicate with who you’re playing with, and have fun.

What do I do if I want to change my character’s magic discipline (either primary or secondary)?
You may change up to one magic type every 4 months. During your character’s first solstice or equinox starting March 2021, characters will find a small flower growing in a glass pot next to them the morning after. The flower is magical and very hardy, so don’t worry if your character doesn’t know how to take care of it well. During each equinox and solstice, the flower will bear fruit that, when eaten, will change one of their magic types. To do this OOC, just comment the taken list with a request to change one of your magic types. You can only do this once during each seasonal period. Each plant is individualized (you can decide whatever flower fits your character) and eating someone else’s fruit will make your character extremely sick, so it’s not recommended. The fruit only spoils with the changing of the season when a new one grows.

Note that changing a magic type this way will require the character to learn the new discipline from scratch. If your character would like to change a magic type without having to learn from scratch, they may have to make a deal with Morganna.

(If you want to change your character’s magic type without their consent, you can always say a pesky pixie sneaked into their home and plopped it in their mouth while they slept.)

What are smart phones and the Avalon Online network like? Does it use magic?
Much like the real world, there are a few varieties of smart phones available from regular rectangular smartphones to foldable ones, ones with keyboards, and even smartwatches and AR smart glasses-- the basic provided phone at the start of the game is a regular rectangular phone, but characters are welcome to trade in for whatever they prefer upon arrival in Camelot. All phones have internet access to the Avalon Online (AOL) internet system. Feel free to assume internet access wirelessly anywhere unless otherwise stated in an event or location detail. (The starting area has no dead zones.) Please note that AOL is accessible to both player characters and native townsfolk, so you are welcome to handwave NPC interactions the same as you would an NPC interaction in a log thread. (This does not include mod-run NPCs.)

AOL has some standard features, such as live text chat, video chat, voice chat, and a cloud service for storing and sharing images. Some game applications are available for download as well, but the experience may be a little different than what normal gamers would expect.

One big difference between real world phones and Avalon's phones and internet is the use of magic in combination with technology. Known as technomages, those with both cognitive magic and programming/hacking skills developed technomagic such as the MagiCast screen system and accessibility options. MagiCast allows for an immerse telepathic experience that allows users to share sounds, images, and impressions of sensations such as smell or taste using enchanted technology within the device. It does not allow for the transmission of sensations of physical contact, so it is not possible to cause someone pain using MagiCast. MagiCast can similarly be used as a magical accessibility option, which when enabled can provide telepathic reading of messages and images to the user.

The recipe for creating MagiCast chips is closely guarded by AOL to prevent misuse. Characters must opt into the use of MagiCast upon receiving a new phone or it will not be activated.

My character is injured or sick through naturally occurring means. How can they get better?
If they are in Camelot, there is a hospital that will treat them with a combination of medicine and magic. If they are outside of the city, they may need to rely on players with healing magic, potions, or potential healing locations/items nearby. It is possible that your character may stay injured for sometime or develop scars if they are not able to find immediate means of healing, so make sure you think about what you want to do!

My character is sick because of a curse or other magical ailment. How can they get better?
Potions which counteract magic are the way to go! Characters can learn "Recipes" for different item sets by using rewards points at the Elphame Traders', can find other characters who know them, or can get help at the hospital in Camelot.

    Do characters age in Avalon?
No! No one ages in Avalon as it exists outside of time itself. However, you are still vulnerable to injury, illness, trauma, and fatalities.

What happens if a character dies?
If a character dies, they must be revived by other characters in the game via ritual. Revival rituals require characters to call upon Morganna le Fay, who is in possession of the Chalice of Life. Note that all revival rituals will result in a life-for-a-life exchange, though Morganna will not notify characters of such. The life may be a generic NPC, it is up to you if the involved characters know them or not. If you really want to get crazy with it and all players are in agreement, it may be a player character (which will in turn require another ritual and so on)-- it can be as dramatic as you would like.

If it is not known that your character is dead or they do not have anyone who likes them enough to perform a ritual, your character may haunt other characters until they cooperate. We do ask that you arrange this with other players before killing your character in game.

How does my dead character haunt other characters?
Your character will not be visible as a ghost or capable of being heard by living characters, but they will be capable of temporary access to spiritual magic. This allows ghost characters to write messages on mirrors, knock things off of shelves/tables, shatter all the windows in a room at once, lower the temperature of rooms, and whisper messages into the dreams of sleeping people. Ghosts may also attempt to possess other characters, but may only do so for about 1 minute and cannot speak during the possession. A ghost may not possess the same person twice during the same death cycle. If your character dies more than once, they will be able to possess characters for up to an hour, but may still not possess the same person more than once during the same death cycle.

Are there any side-effects after my character is revived?
Characters who die will lose their familiar and be forced to bond with a new one. The familiar dies with the character and is not revived in the ritual. At this time, your character MUST change both of their magic disciplines to a new magic type-- they will no longer have access to the spells they were previously bonded with unless they gain them through other means. This is the only means to change both magic types at once.

Is there a wait-time on death revivals?
Ritual takes about 30 minutes to perform after coming to an agreement with Morganna. There is no OOC penalty for killing your character. However...

Do I need to notify the mods if my character dies?
Yes, the mods need to know who Morganna is reviving and what your new familiar and magic type are. Please fill out the appropriate form on the Taken page to notify.

What if my character is dead in canon when they are brought into the game?
They will be brought back a second before death and healed, so they still are able to remember what happened but their body is still alive and heal-able to avoid needing to start off with a ritual. Avalon will heal them upon transportation. Though most people will be returned to the exact moment in time, perhaps characters may be able to seek a way within the game to change their fate. Only time will tell.

Are there non-player ghosts in Avalon?
Yes, ghosts exist! Characters may hear rumors from natives that such entities frequent the currently inaccessible Land of Rot. There’s currently no clear way to communicate with any if you do happen to run into one.

    ⦿ Money, Quests, & Titles
    What currency exists in game?
Gold, of course! Sort of. It's kind of bulky to carry coins around all the time, so Camelot developed an app for that. Using the smart phone provided to you by Archimedes at the Rent-a-Ride Outpost upon arrival, you can use a banking app to make purchases. The currency is "gold" and when you make a purchase, your phone will make a little coin jingling sound. This notification sound cannot be turned off for security reasons.

    How much is money worth?
1G = 1 cent USD. Just do what sounds fair and appropriate for the item (or not if you want your character to get swindled). The price conversion rate is just for reference if your character wants to talk about money. The mods aren't going to price check you unless you're claiming your character paid $1 for a brand new castle or something clearly inappropriate.

How does my character get money?
They're gonna need a source of income! Characters may complete quests, get a job, or barter items and magical chores to townspeople.

What jobs are available to my character?
That is entirely up to you for the most part. However, there are specific titles that are available to characters only after OOC requirements are completed.

What are the OOC requirements to gain a title?
Complete 5 or more unique quests of the type associated with the title you want your character to gain.
  • Knighthood (QuestBoard) or Unseelie (Dark Web): Combat Quests (Have a ⚔ emoji on the QuestBoard)
  • Nobility (QuestBoard) or Arcane Mages (Dark Web): Assist Quests (Have a 🛡 emoji on the QuestBoard)
  • The Compensated (Either/Victim): Either Assist or Combat quests in which your character is the victim of the stated problem for another character to save or harm.
  • In-game, characters ICly prove their worth by completing these quests. This is why the threads must be from different quests, or else it makes no sense IC that your character is gaining a title for doing 1 task 5 times. You can still use duplicate rewards to claim rewards at the Elphame Traders.

How does my character gain knighthood?
You must prove your mettle and dedication to Camelot through combat quest types before King Arthur is willing to accept you as a loyal knight. Becoming a knight earns respect and kindness from the NPCs in Camelot as well as the trust of the people. Additionally, it earns you an extra rewards point at the Elphame Traders' for combat-oriented quests. To apply for a title, use the provided form on the taken page.

    Knights receive the following benefits:
  • Opportunity for armored archaeopteryx mounts (must still bond and earn their trust, as they are not friendly).
  • The ability to appoint squires and deputies to patrol areas of Camelot. (Squires and deputies do not get rewards bonuses, they are an IC role only- knights may choose how they compensate these roles on their own.)
  • Receive monthly paychecks from Camelot and are welcome to visit the castle armory and training grounds at any time.
  • A "Knight's Quest" will be added to the monthly quests starting with the January 2022 tasks. They can choose anyone to participate in the quest with them, but they will be the only ones to receive the information in-game as it will not be on the widely available quest board. Non-knights who are invited by a knight to participate may receive Combat Quest credit toward a title, as it counts as training experience, but cannot claim the knight title bonus on rewards.

  • How does my character become a lord or lady (noble)?
Titles of nobility will be given to characters who complete (thread out) 5 or more unique assistance quests from the regular QuestBoard. Those who dedicate themselves to serving Camelot will not go unrewarded, even if they are not warriors. The title does not automatically come with mass fortune, but it does come with prestige and recognition that may get you into higher-end clubs or get hard-to-get reservations. It also grants you an extra rewards point at the Elphame Traders' on assistance quests for this character. To apply for a title, use the provided form on the taken page.

Those of Camelot peerage will be granted:
  • Land and a small castle, should they choose to accept it, and will be designated governing bodies of these areas. Refugees from Lestari and Celliwig (as well as participating player-characters) will move into these lands. Once you've decided on the details, use the notable locations form to submit information about your character's township.
  • An initial budget from Camelot to get started. 15% taxes must go to Camelot, what goes beyond that is up to the noble in charge.
  • These lands are still a part of Camelot and must follow Camelot laws and answer to the king, but nobles can enact city ordinances of their own in addition to that, as long as they do not violate the rights of Camelot citizens.

  • How does my character become an Unseelie?
The Unseelie Court is a name for the fairies who do not need a reason for cruelty-- they are often associated with violent crimes. Completing 5 combat quests from the dark web will count toward your character being accepted as an honorary member of the Unseelie Court.

Honorary Unseelie receive the following benefits:
  • Unseelie fae in Elphame will ignore these characters if found alone. If there are others around, they will act as normal so as to not out a fellow Unseelie.
  • Unseelie characters may be given information about upcoming dangers during events before entering the area through connections made with the fae. (For example, if a particular creature is at large in an area or if there are toxins in the area, etc. It won't be all the info, but your character could be more knowledgeable going in than other characters will be.)
  • Receive discounts from businesses who realize what they are and want to soothe their violent tendencies.
  • Gain allies who may help them out of captivity if they run into legal repercussions.

  • How does my character become an Arcane Mage?
Complete 5 dark web assistance tasks to gain the title of Arcane Mage. Arcane Mages are a society of sorcerers who engage in illicit activities behind the scenes. Though they may be facilitators or deal in crimes non-combative in nature, they are key to keeping the dark web and organized crime running smoothly. Arcane mages often engage in risky activities that result in higher payouts than traditional assistance tasks. It also grants you an extra rewards point at the Elphame Traders' on assistance quests for this character. To apply for a title, use the provided form on the taken page.

Arcane mages gain the following benefits:
  • Gain access to a "Black Market" item on the Rewards page each month purchasable only by those with this title.
  • Receive power boosts during the full moon after an arcane cult ritual performance held in secret.
  • Receive a special amulet stone from the cult that they can use to reflect spells directed at them back to the caster. (Must be used with intentionality, it cannot passively protect the mage if they're sneaked up on or not remembering to use it, etc.)
  • Dark web tasks have higher monetary payouts.

  • How does my character become The Compensated?
This title is for the butt monkeys out there who have bravely gone through some shit. Players who allow their character to be experimented on, injured, killed, or otherwise the "victim" in at least 5 AC-length quest threads will have the opportunity to gain this title for their character. This title will work with quests from either the QuestBoard or the Dark Web, but only if your character allows themselves to be put at a disadvantage by another person completing the original quest.

The Compensated receive the following benefits: Camelot will provide these characters with a monthly stipend to help ease their suffering (enough to replace a regular job income), as well as immediate access to all Rewards-based Totem Recipes (excludes Toto's Totem) without purchase to encourage them to keep adventuring despite their experienced trauma! The title gives the same +1 bonus to quest threads on rewards once earned as other titles.

Can my character hold more than one title?
Characters can hold up to two titles. Each title is a +1 rewards bonus equivalent. Please note that while you can complete tasks of any variety, you can only hold titles within either track. (So a Knight can do dark web tasks, but cannot earn an Unseelie title. From an IC standpoint, if a knight is going around committing murder, they're not sticking to the knight's code, you know?)

What are quests and how do I do them?
6 quests will be posted each month (3 normal, 3 dark web). Anyone may complete quests at any time. You may handwave your character completing quests and earning G, however, any quests you thread out you may submit for rewards points at the Elphame Traders'. Quest threads can increase in value with titles (so while normally submitted, it would be worth 1 point. With a single title, it would be worth 2 points, with two titles, it would be worth 3 points. 3 points is the maximum a quest thread can be worth).

    In summary:
Threaded quest = 1 pt per quest, but can be increased with titles (up to 3 points total):
Knighthood: +1 point per quest after gaining title
Nobility: +1 point per quest after gaining title
Unseelie: +1 point per quest after gaining title
Arcane Mage: +1 point per quest after gaining title
The Compensated: +1 point per quest after gaining title
Ready to claim a title for your character? Head over to the Taken page and fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

    ⦿ General Setting Information
For specifics about in-game locations, please check out the locations page.

What is the technology/infrastructure level of the game?
Though it may vary from city-to-city, in general the game features a mix of modern and naturalistic technologies. Most architecture is modern but may be infused with trees and flowers in a way that makes it a still-living space. (See locations page for more detailed information.) There are no cars or planes. Horse-drawn vehicles are the primary means of longer travel (though those vehicles do use a mix of technology and magic, so they’re definitely more comfortable than a regular medieval carriage! Features like AC and heating, radio, and smartphone interfacing are available. It’s like a car, but horsepower has a more literal meaning.) Bicycles are also available for travel around the city, but as there aren’t many roads outside of it, use is limited outside of Camelot City.

City areas all have running water, indoor plumbing, and electricity. Though harvesting energy may be a magical process done off-screen, so please don’t ask us for specific detail about how it works. It’s magic, y’all. Yes, your characters still have to charge their phones using electricity. However, characters who get advanced with their elemental magic may be able to charge their phones on their own… but it’s really not recommended unless you’re really good at it. Many a good elemental user has exploded their phone and had to purchase a new one.

What kind of entertainment is available?
We will not be dictating all available businesses within the game. Anything you need for a thread, you can basically assume if it’s available in modern times and doesn’t interfere with other information in the game, it’s fine. Theaters, performance venues, studios, and so on are available in the main city of Camelot. There are parks, a museum, a library, and so on as well.
Characters also have access to streaming of music and general movies, provided that it does not break the fourth wall for any characters in game or popular series that are regularly seen in RP. There is no access to canon-specific series, music, or other media unless your character brings something from their home as an inventory item. Characters are free to upload anything they bring and share with other characters.

What kind of social media is available to characters?
Everything is basically done through AOL (Avalon Online) but there are apps on the network similar to Instagram, Twitter, and so on. Use blingee or have characters put filters on their video posts. Enjoy memes that don’t break the 4th wall. Have fun with it. Literally as long as you aren’t hurting anyone, it’s fine.

Can my character own their own business or make money as a social media influencer?
Yes, characters can run their own businesses and become social media influencers by purchasing rewards available at the Elphame Traders Rewards page, then posting their business/social media platform info on the Character-Run Businesses page. This way, anyone can see/interact with/reference businesses and popular social media influencers as a part of the game.

Okay, I know how my character gets a job and money now. What about where they're living? Do they have to pay rent?
There is a designated hotel in Camelot for new arrivals. It's a single room with a single bed, a mini fridge, AC, a microwave, a toilet, sink, and a shower. There is a continental breakfast room where they serve fresh muffins, fruit, coffee, and tea every morning from 6am-8am. If you don't get up between those hours, you don't get fed. All other meals are your character's responsibility. This is what is provided for free, but your character can move out at any time and find a new home as long as they can afford to do so. They're welcome to live wherever they like as long as they don't disrupt the environment. They can camp out all the time if they want to, or they can settle down in an apartment or house. Please note that all architecture in Avalon is built around nature, so it's not uncommon to find indoor trees and streams or ponds in all aspects of architecture throughout the city.

If you want your character to get a job, go for it. As long as it’s not ridiculous, it’s fine. A 12-year-old with no medical experience isn’t going to be hired at a pharmacy, but there are apprenticeships and more available, and jobs will be especially readily available if they can get your character to use their magic. (It’s encouraged!) If you want a job that would have an influence on government affairs or something big, just shoot a mod a PM to make sure it’s ok. (It probably will be, but just in case. We don’t want someone saying they took over the town crier position and spread a bunch of lies without notifying us or two people saying they’ve both taken over as the royal poison taster, stuff like that.)

I would rather my character goes to school instead of work. Is it possible for them to get income for this?
Yes! Another means of income is attending school! Avalon education focuses mainly on writing, reading, cross-species communication (IE Peacemaking with the fairies by understanding and respecting cultures. Note in these classrooms the communication spell does not work, making it an immersive language course.) and course magic. There are also various trades (like engineering, architecture, etc.) that can be learned through courses at the schools for underage and adult characters alike. All classes will of course touch on magic and education within their field and is highly encouraged by all Avalonians. Not only is education free of charge, but Camelot’s government also considers it training for becoming an effective member of society and thus will pay a livable wage to anyone attending classes full time.

Educators are very respected for this reason as well, so anyone seeking employment at the schools will be well-compensated. Note that while still green with their magic, characters may need to start off as a teacher’s aide or assistant while they get their bearings until they are able to integrate an understanding of magic into their curriculum.

How does everyone understand each other’s languages?
    Magic.

Ok but more detail if you want it: Magic is used so that each person hears everyone in their personal language. So if Character A speaks German and character B speaks Blorgon, character A will hear character B in German even though B is speaking Blorgon. (And vice versa.)

    Can my character fish/hunt/camp/etc.?
Go for it. Just remember that if you include any details about the act of ending an animal, you include a content warning. Also remember that if your character hunts in noted sacred places, hunts sacred animals (will be noted in bestiary if they come up), or pisses off the local fairies, they’re gonna have a bad time. It had also better be for food—sport hunting is not allowed.

Is there an official money lending/borrowing system, like a bank?
There is no system to obtain a loan through any official channels; loans are not commonly found in Avalon. However! Characters can go ahead and borrow a little of the gold stuff from a fairy. Just be warned, they can be kind of nasty about getting it back; they won't come after the person who owes them the gold because, hey, got to get paid. But loved ones may find themselves turned into a frog (or other creature), or some other magical malady will befall those the character cares about until they do the noble thing and repay their debt.

Note that some fairies may disguise themselves as humans, but the disguises will not be perfect—there’s always something, like a second set of eyelids, off-color parts, or some other small detail that’s very easy for the unobservant, unalert, or unaware to miss. If you would like to play with this, you are welcome to come up with your own fun magical maladies, but a few examples of things you might encounter include: turning people into statues, giving people pig noses and tails, magnetizing a person so that all metal objects fly toward them, jelly knees, itchy rainbow urine, sleeping curses, or even something like causing all the plants around their home to overgrow and take over their living space.

    What is Avalon’s nightlife like?
Avalon's nightlife overall may vary by location. Camelot City has a mild nightlife, with plenty of taverns and a few food and entertainment industries. Most things close before the witching hour (2-3am), as there are a number of creatures that have night functions that won't come out if there are people around, such as brownies, Asrai, and fairy circle parties that can be very troublesome if interrupted.

What is the in-setting attitude towards sex?
Fairies are sex-positive and some forms of magic actually require sexual rituals, so while there won't be any events encouraging smut or anything like that, it's unlikely that anyone in Avalon will shame characters for showing an interest in sex. That said, it is considered a private act and not something to be done in public or shoved in peoples' faces.

In regard to professional sexuality, there isn't a particular red light district or central area for sexual/risque businesses. Sex workers are considered a normal part of life and are provided legal protections and have safety/sanitation standards. Sex work purchases are taxed-- the taxes help provide birth control and health care for sex workers. The businesses are subtle in nature, using innuendo to indicate from the outside what their business is in regard to. (So like a brothel might just have a tasteful eggplant emoji lit up in front of the building for the business name and go by "Eggplant" verbally, or a sex toy shop might be "Love Peach Accessories" etc.) They will not have window displays of products. All sex businesses have a similar enchantment to alcohol-- at the door of any establishment, minors will be unable to pass an invisible barrier to block anyone under their world's legal age from entering establishments. (With the lowest possible age being 16.)

I see that not all areas on the map are listed as accessible. What is stopping my character from ICly heading to that area?
It varies from area to area, honestly. Some areas may have spells to keep them hidden or inaccessible. Others may simply have treacherous environments, horses will refuse to enter, the trees may move on their own, or characters may not have the magical level ready to travel to that area. Any citizen of Camelot will tell characters why they’re Gonna Have a Bad Time™ if they ask.

    ↑ TOP OF PAGE-------------------------------------------

    ⦿ OOC Mechanics
How is canon proceeding back home without my character?
It's not. Time is frozen in the entire multiverse outside of Avalon. Your character was pulled out of the frozen time to attempt to help generate enough magic to stop the destruction of the multiverse. Their entire world is frozen back home. They were pulled in because a familiar was able to bond with them to pull them into Avalon. Since it is very difficult for familiars to find people to bond with, no one in Avalon has any control over who is chosen to come and who leaves.

OK, so how do canon updates work?
Because time is frozen outside of Avalon, canon updates will be more like memory rebuilds. Your character was simply lacking current memories, which their familiar noticed and puts your character to sleep for a full day to attempt to re-strengthen their bond with the character to help them regain those memories. This can happen as many times as the player wants.

    What about hiatuses?
You can either auto-pilot your character while you're gone or you can say their familiar wasn't sure their bond was strong enough and put them into a deep sleep to repair and strengthen the bond.

Hiatuses will exempt you from submitting AC if you are gone for more than 2 weeks in the month you declare the hiatus. If your hiatus is for less than 2 weeks, you are still expected to complete AC.

We recognize that a significant portion of Dreamwidth RPers experience situations that involve physical and mental health issues, low-income struggles, and other emergencies. Isle of Avalon moderators believe that compassion and understanding are a much more effective means of moderation than strict, no-exception hiatus policies. If you have an emergency and need to declare a retroactive or extended hiatus, please contact a moderator through the Mod Contact page (screened) if an extension is necessary at least 7 days before the end of the month. Hiatus extensions will be reviewed privately on a case-by-case basis by moderators. We would like a hiatus system to be a safety net for players, rather than an additional responsibility, but do not intend for it to be used in lieu of a strike system or as a means to avoid completed activity checks.

Processed activity drops will not be retracted. The test drive meme goes up the day after each month, so you can app back into the game without a significant wait period if you are still interested in playing as a member of Isle of Avalon, provided you are able to demonstrate ability to pass AC in the current month by using a current TDM thread that meets AC standards. (At least 5 consecutive comments in one thread from the current month.)

You can declare an AC-exempt hiatus here or if you would just like to announce it for courtesy, feel free to post in the OOC community.

    How do drops work?
Your character's bond with their familiar dissolved and they were sent back to be frozen in time in their world. You can drop a character here.

Please note that if you are dropped via activity check and re-apply, we will require a sample from the current test drive meme of at least 5 consecutive comments from your character (AC requirement for 1 month) to demonstrate that you are able to be an active player at the present time. If you are unable to fulfill this requirement, we ask that you wait until you are able to actively play in a game to re-apply. If you drop using the dropped page and are returning at a later time, this does not apply.

If my character goes home, will they remember their time in the game?
At this time, no. Time is frozen in all universes outside of the Isle of Avalon right now. If our heroes succeed at saving the multiverse, they can remember their time in Avalon after time starts moving again.

What time zone is used for OOC announced/stated times?
    Pacific Standard Time (PST).

Is there a place for players to gather together, meet each other, and hang out?
While we will be posting monthly CR memes and everyone is welcome to chat together on announcement plurks, we will not be hosting any official Discord server. We do not currently feel we want to moderate a livechat service so our focus remains on the core functions of the game. However, there is an unofficial server that is run by players in-game. Please head to the bottom of this post for player-donated resources.

Where can I find information about game activity and other rules?
Check out the rules page. The activity information is double-posted in both the rules and the very first line of the activity check spreadsheet for your convenience. We wanted to list it separately to make sure that it is clear, easy to find, and delineated as a rule rather than setting-expanding information.

I am new to DWRP and/or know someone who is new to DWRP who I would like to invite. Is there any quick guide I can use to find my feet?
Yes! Please check out this document. It's a quick 4-page guide to all the basics. This document is written by Tay!mod, so please feel free to let us know if you have any feedback via PM to the mod journal. It is not made specifically for this game, but as a general resource, so please feel free to share with anyone.

    ⦿ Player-Donated Resources
    What are player-donated resources?
We're proud of how awesome our players are and are happy to display any resources that we believe are usable by potentially a large number of people in the game. If you have something you would like to contribute to Isle of Avalon players at-large, please send it through to us via the Mod Contact page for review. Please note that while moderators may utilize these resources, we are not in charge of them and do not have the ability to make changes/edits to them.

Hi hi mods, I have some lore questions! Claude here is likely to go hit the library straight away, and he'll be interested in learning about the history of Avalon. Aside from general Arthurian myths, is there anything on the world's history in the years after Arthur's passing? How was Camelot governed in his absence, and what kind of political structure does it have? What are/were relations like with neighbouring leaders?

Since religion is also very influential in Claude's own world, is there much to say about faith or spirituality in Avalon? People seem to live closely in tune with nature and respect it, and have rituals at different times of year, but I wondered if there was more. Also, since a lot of Arthurian myths were heavily Christianised, are those elements still present in Avalon's stories or are they more pre-Christian/fantasy-based?

I hope this all makes sense... Sorry Claude is so nosy and has to know all of the things. :') Thank you in advance!

This is amazing, thanks so much for such a detailed writeup! I don't need anything more specific for now, but I'll give you a shout if anything comes up.
